August on the Farm: A Golden Rhythm

Hello Friends,

If you could spend a day with us at Meadowlark Heritage Farm in August, here's what you would see...

The rolling Palouse hills have traded their spring green for warm shades of gold. Mornings can have a suggestion of cooler air and quiet skies, while the afternoons bring hot sunshine, smoky skies, dusty boots, and goats searching for the last green morsels in the pasture. It's a beautiful season - different from spring, but just as full of life.

The Morning Milking

Milking starts early while the air is still cool. The does normally come in eagerly for their breakfast in the stanchion while being milked. Now there are a few that prefer a personal escort to the milk stand and others (Dove and Nettle!) that prefer to stand next to the wall in the stanchion.

Details are important while milking, keeping everything clean, filtering it, chilling the milk immediately and bottling it all up that many local families enjoy each week. It's a rhythm we've repeated hundreds of times, but one that never feels ordinary.

Babies are Growing

The kids born this year are growing up quickly. Our kidding season ended up being super long. Our plan is to have a shorter season for 2027! But those little ones are becoming confident young goats with persoanlities all of their own. Some are curious enough to greet every visitor at the fence, while others would like to curl up in your lap or think they deserve every scratch behind the ears.

Crafting Heritage

Once the dairy work is finished, the rest of the farm comes alive.

You might find us wrapping bars of goat milk soap, pouring new batches, filling online orders, stocking the farm store, collecting eggs, hanging up laundry to dry outside, or making kefir, cheese, or caramel sauce.

There is always another chore waiting - and somehow, always one I wasn't expecting! Of course, no farm day ever goes exactly as planned, and there's almost always a goat providing a little extra entertainment.

August Sunsets Glow

People sometimes ask what my favorite part of farming is.

It isn't just the fresh milk or handcrafted soap. It's knowing that every jar of milk, every bar of soap, every carton of eggs, and every package that leaves our farm represents work done with care. We have the privilege of caring for these animals every day, and it's an honor to share the fruits of that work with families who value knowing where their food and products come from.
